A new driving law has come into force across the UK this week, with motorists warned they may not have spotted the change.
From Tuesday, 19 August 2025, drivers of certain larger vehicles on international journeys must have a smart tachograph 2 system installed.

The rule applies to vehicles currently fitted with the older smart tachograph 1. These must now be retrofitted with either a 'full' or 'transitional' smart tachograph 2 before heading abroad.
Vehicles used only within the UK can continue operating with the original smart tachograph 1.
The change follows updated EU legislation incorporated into UK law through the Drivers' Hours and Tachographs Regulations. The roll-out was delayed in 2023 when parts for the upgraded device were not yet available, prompting the introduction of a transitional version.
Another update is already scheduled. From 1 July 2026, newly registered goods vehicles over 2.5 tonnes, used internationally for hire or reward, will also be required to carry either a full or transitional smart tachograph 2.

However, there are exceptions. Vehicles used abroad for a company or driver's own account — where driving is not the main activity — do not need a tachograph.
Likewise, goods vehicles weighing 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes that operate only in the UK remain exempt from the rules.
The changes arrive as part of a wider package of road regulations, with drivers also recently reminded of a £100 fine linked to a little-known parking rule at popular UK destinations.
