THE Bayeux Tapestry has gone on public display in Britain for the first time in almost 1,000 years, giving visitors a rare chance to see one of the country's most famous pieces of medieval history on home soil.

The enormous 70-metre embroidery is now being exhibited at the British Museum in London after being loaned by France while the Bayeux Museum undergoes renovation.

Tickets for the exhibition sold out for the rest of 2026, underlining the extraordinary interest surrounding its return to the UK. The initial release generated £2.5 million in ticket sales and became the British Museum's fastest-selling exhibition.

The tapestry tells the story of the events surrounding the Norman Conquest, culminating in William the Conqueror's victory over King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Despite its name and centuries-long association with the French town of Bayeux, the historic embroidery is widely believed to have been made in England during the 11th century.

That makes its arrival in London particularly significant, with the artwork returning to the country where it is thought to have originally been produced.

Getting the fragile object to Britain was an operation in itself.

The tapestry was transported from France in a specially designed, air-conditioned and anti-vibration case, with extensive measures put in place to protect the nearly 1,000-year-old work during its journey.

Its arrival was kept largely under wraps, with the tapestry travelling to London under police escort.

The exhibition itself is being staged in the British Museum's Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery, where visitors can follow the enormous embroidered story almost as if reading a medieval graphic novel.

The work contains scenes of political intrigue, battles, ships, horses and everyday medieval life, offering a remarkable visual record of the events that changed the course of English history.

It is also more than simply an ancient artwork.

The loan has been presented by both Britain and France as a major cultural exchange and a symbol of closer relations between the two countries. France has loaned the tapestry to Britain while the British Museum is sending treasures including the Sutton Hoo collection and Lewis chess pieces to France.

The exhibition is expected to run until July 2027 before the Bayeux Tapestry returns to France.
