THE M4 remains closed in both directions this morning after a crash left the motorway shut overnight.

The closure is affecting traffic between junction 8/9 for the A404(M) at Maidenhead and junction 10 for the A329(M) serving Wokingham and Bracknell.

The motorway was first closed at around 8.23pm on Wednesday evening and remains shut while Thames Valley Police carry out crash investigation work.

National Highways has warned motorists to expect delays on the approaches to the closure.

Queues have been reported stretching for around three miles, with drivers facing delays of approximately 30 minutes.

The diversion route is also experiencing congestion as motorists look for alternative ways around the closed section.

Westbound traffic is being directed along a diversion marked by a hollow square symbol, while eastbound drivers are being directed along a separate signed route.

Police remain at the scene and National Highways said the investigation was expected to continue for several more hours.

The nature of the crash and whether anyone has been seriously injured has not yet been confirmed.

Drivers heading towards the affected section are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys and follow diversion signs.

The latest traffic information shows congestion building on surrounding roads as motorists are diverted away from the M4.

There is currently no confirmed time for the motorway to reopen.

Drivers are advised to check traffic conditions before travelling and avoid the affected section where possible.
