PRINCE George has followed in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, after starting at one of Britain's most famous schools.

The 13-year-old royal, who is second in line to the British throne, began at Eton College on Tuesday as he entered the next stage of his education.

George arrived at the school with his parents and was greeted by headteacher Simon Henderson.

"Welcome, good luck, enjoy it," Mr Henderson told the young royal.

George was dressed in a dark suit with a blue shirt and tie for his first day.

He is expected to change into Eton's distinctive "school dress", which includes a black tailcoat, waistcoat, pinstriped trousers and a stiff white collar.

Why is Prince George going to Eton?

Eton College is one of the most prestigious schools in Britain and has educated generations of prominent figures from British public life.

The boys' boarding school was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI and has a history stretching back more than five centuries.

Despite its university-like reputation, Eton is a school for boys aged between 13 and 18.

The school is known for its highly competitive admissions process, distinctive uniform and long association with Britain's political, cultural and business establishment.

How much does Eton College cost?

Eton is one of Britain's most expensive private schools, with annual fees of around $85,000.

The school provides boarding education and has become one of the most recognisable names in the British independent school system.

Its high fees and historic reputation have made it a symbol of Britain's elite education system.

Which famous people went to Eton?

Eton has educated an extraordinary list of famous former pupils across politics, entertainment, literature and business.

Around 20 British prime ministers have attended the school, including former prime ministers such as David Cameron and Boris Johnson.

The school's alumni also include actors Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Damian Lewis and Dominic West.

Literary figures who attended include George Orwell, the author of Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Ian Fleming, who created James Bond.

The long list of former pupils has helped cement Eton's reputation as far more than simply a private school.

Did Prince William go to Eton?

Prince William also attended Eton College, meaning George is following directly in his father's educational footsteps.

William studied at the school before going on to the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where he met his future wife Catherine, Princess of Wales.

George's decision to attend Eton continues that family connection with the historic school.

What happens next for Prince George?

Starting at Eton marks an important new chapter for George as he continues his education away from his previous school.

As the future king, his education is likely to attract considerable public interest, particularly given the school's long association with Britain's political and cultural establishment.

George remains second in line to the throne behind his father, Prince William.

His first day at Eton therefore represents not only a major personal milestone but another step in the education of a future British monarch.
